White Lies at HMV Institute Birmingham

14th February 2011 | 80%

If I had to compare White Lies with anything, it would have to be the German national football team. Never emphatic and always solid, you know exactly what to expect, and you know that the fans will invariably be left feeling happy at the end of 90 minutes.

Botany - Feeling Today

Western Vinyl | 83%

It might seem harsh to relegate this as background music as if to say it doesn’t require close attention but, Feeling Today works better when it creeps up on you in unexpected ways and slowly feeds in and out of your conscious mind.

Elephant - Ants

Memphis Industries | 80%

It contains the right amount of strings to make it tropical friendly (also some rattles helped with that mood too) and a pinch of very mild, chill out drums that will put your mind right in a hammock between the palm trees on a desert island.

Timo Tolkki - Saana Warriror of Light Part 1

Scarlet Records | 90%

Timo Tolkki is probably best known as the guitarist, song writer and producer of the Finnish power metal band Stratovarius. His style started out as very darkly progressive and gradually has become more accessible.

This Is Blues - Volume 01-04

Black culture arguably pioneered every major musical genre in the United States, with the blues as one of the most important because it impacts on so many others: its knock-on effect can neither be understated nor undermined.

Every Avenue - Picture Perfect

Fearless Records | 87%

Every Avenue have a unique musical style that combines your standard American pop-punk with jolts of, almost Bon Jovi like, classic rock! Being a fan of both pop-punk and Bon Jovi, Every Avenue blew me away with songs such as ‘Saying Goodbye,’ ‘Girl Like That’ and the title track ‘Picture Perfect’.

Kerrang! Relentless Energy Drink Tour 2011

Manchester Academy 15/02/2011 | 87%

If there’s one tour sure to lure out the Converse wearing skater-punks from the warmth of winter hibernation it’s this annual Kerrang! Relentless Energy Drink Tour! Last year featured a smörgåsbord of up and coming great British talents including My Passion, Young Guns and the always excellent Welsh boyos The Blackout.

The Sounds - Something To Die For

SideOneDummy / Arnioki Records | 84%

The summer of 2010 found The Sounds featured at over 25 European music festivals! In the Foo Fighters’ 2003 video for “Times Like These,” frontman Dave Grohl was filmed wearing a The Sounds tee shirt. First single or not, the band clearly has an established platform on which to stand.

Virtual Boy - Symphony No. None

Alpha Pup Records | 88%

Virtual Boy explore the emotions well to create an EP that is truly breathtaking. It takes a while for their innovative ideas to catch on but when they do there are few artists that come close to their unique sound. It's just a shame that some people will likely write this off after just one listen.

The AltSounds Outlook - The Brit Awards 2011

So what did this years Brit Awards have in store for us?

A few things The Brit Awards 2011 has taught us is that grime is on the rise and in order to be a breakthrough female act you have to dance around seductively and sing about sex. Oh, and Justin Beiber is a little bitch, end.

Build a Band - Issue 4: The Lead Vocalist

Who would you pick to be in your greatest band ever?

Maybe it’s the fact that the previous performers are still alive and kicking. Perhaps it’s the old adage ‘die before I get old’ excuse is the reason this lead singer was chosen. It might even be because he didn’t die in the ‘usual’ alcohol and drugs routine. This man’s prowess on-stage outclasses any single performer, his range is unparalleled and if it wasn’t his untimely death it is a very real possibility that he may still be performing with the third greatest rock group of all time.
