Liverpool Sound City Festival 2011

Day 1, 2 & 3 Live Coverage

This is the fourth incarnation of the annual Liverpool Sound City (LSC) festival and every year it gets bigger and better. Over 300 bands from 24 countries are being showcased this year, from established acts like The Kooks and The View to barely known artist about to break on to the scene, in a variety of venues right across the city, ranging from the grand open spaces in St George's Hall, The Metropolitan Cathedral's Crypt Hall and St Luke's Church (locally known as the Bombed Out Church), the semi-permanent stages of clubs and bars such as Heebie Jeebies, Hannah's Bar and Bumper, the more artistic settings of Screenadelica and Static Gallery and the accomplished music venues of 02 Academy and The Masque (Barfly).

Queens Of The Stoneage at Manchester Academy Live

Manchester Academy May 21st 2011

Opening their set with Regular John, the chords from the beginning gradually building up the tension alongside the chugging guitar sound they call their own, the entire atmosphere simply exploded. With lyrics “Open up your eyes, open up your room, open up your arms” chanted back to the band throughout the track. Monotonous hard hitting riffs present throughout and assisting the full bodied sound that showed no signs of weakness.

HMV Hammersmith Apollo With AC/DC Attending 06/05/2011

Life is precious! We only get one shot at life to accomplish everything our hearts desire. You don’t need to survive an unintentional game of chicken with a double-decker bus to appreciate life is for living. Whether you’re wildly ambitious or emotionally inert, I believe everyone should have aspirations, goals and dreams. However insignificant or magnificent they may be; whether you aspire to polish off a whole tub of Ben and Jerry’s or dream of becoming a world class musician, dreams are what encourage human progression and fuel our passion for life.

Lowdown: Skindred's Benji B

HMV Forum, Kentish Town, May 7, 2011

Prepped for another deep inhale, Benji is suddenly interrupted, as the door swings open. In stumbles a middle-aged groupie, bloated from the foams in her plastic beer cup. Star-struck and slightly shaken, the woman steadies herself and apologises for the intrusion. Benji throws her a cheeky wink as she giggles her way out of the room. “The beauty of Skindred is about touching lives. It’s about reaching older people and younger people, and that’s all that it’s about. I’m like Jesus in that way.” Benji jibes.

Diary Of A Festival Addict. Issue #4: Slam Dunk

Leeds University 28/05/2011

This year’s indoor, day-long, Slam Dunk Leeds festival was a complete sell out (I mean tickets sold out, not that the festival compromised its morality in exchange for more money) and attracted more than 40 bands across seven different stages. Attracting more and more well-known artists with each passing year, Slam Dunk Leeds 2011 just came to a close and subsequently took one massive dump on every other Slam Dunk these blue eyes and two ears have ever witnessed. The festival brought together some of the greatest and hotly anticipated acts from across the globe, and on this, its 10th anniversary since the creation of club night, Slam Dunk booked its best line-up yet, to truly mark this special occasion.

The Lowdown: Inna

Music From The Top Ten Summer Blockbusters:

Theoretically, there are only two ways to tempt me out of my local cinema come chartbuster season. The first being the mouth-watering aroma of barbecued meat and the second being the sounds of our many music festivals. With the exception of these (and most likely the outbreak of a fire), there’s not much else that’ll lure me from the comfort of an air-conditioned cinema on a scorching summer’s day.
